KNOW-HOW
Adding a warm color
;
like bronze or
coral, to a cool color scheme is an easy
way to make a room feel cozier.

Accent Colors
Add energy and sophistication
to a two-tone color scheme by
mixing in small amounts of an
accent color. Here’s a foolproof
way to do it: If you started with
a cool color, pick a warm one
for the accent, and vice versa.
We added touches of brown,
inspired by the earthiness of
the wood bench, to offset the
cool lavender. Another example
of this principle: the tried-and-
true combo of yellow and blue.
1
. GO FOR VARIETY
The idea of using
different shades of the
same color goes for
accents, too. A mix of
browns from toasty
chestnut to coppery
bronze look unified but
not too matched.
2
. MAKE A TRADE
For a richer look,
replace some of the
neutrals with a
complementary color.
For example, swapping
white sheets for coral
pumps up the volume
but still harmonizes
with the lavender.
3
. REUSE, RECYCLE
The coverlet from
page

was refashioned into
a bedskirt. A seamstress
can do this for less than
$50. Or just drape the
coverlet over the box
spring for a quick, no-
cost update.
4
. THINK SMALL
Accessories are the best
way to freshen a room
without spending a lot.
A couple of gold-
framed prints, an armful
of pillows, and a throw
enhance the look.
5
. MIND DETAILS
Ribbon or trim
attached with fabric
glue is an easy way to
add an accent color
to a lampshade or
curtain panels. 6D
